Lucknow: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has expressed interest in setting up a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant in Tulsipur village of Balrampur district, as part of efforts to promote the scientific and economic utilisation of cow dung, agricultural residues and other livestock-based bio-waste.

A BPCL team met Uttar Pradesh Gau Seva Commission Chairman Shyam Bihari Gupta to discuss the potential for producing and utilising CBG in the state. The meeting focused on developing a sustainable model that could convert locally available organic waste into clean energy while creating economic opportunities for rural communities.

The BPCL delegation included Hemant Patil, Head–Strategy, Gas; Vivek Pratap Singh Visen, Regional Manager–Gas; and Vipul Arora, Manager–Strategy, Gas. Dr Santosh Sahane of Synergy Forecast India also participated in the discussions.During the meeting, the BPCL team expressed interest in establishing the proposed CBG plant at Tulsipur.

The facility could utilise cow dung sourced from gaushalas along with agricultural residues and other locally available bio-waste. The material would be processed to produce biogas, which would subsequently undergo purification and upgrading to produce compressed biogas.

The proposed project could also explore supplying the locally produced gas to households in the surrounding area. According to the discussions, there is potential to provide piped gas to approximately 1,000 families in the vicinity of Tulsipur.

Such a model could help ensure the productive utilisation of local organic waste while providing rural households with an alternative source of clean energy.

Mobile Technology Could Connect Gaushalas to Bio-Energy Network

Dr Santosh Sahane explained the company’s patented technology for purifying biogas generated at gaushala-based plants through mobile units and filling the upgraded gas into cylinders as CBG.

The technology could potentially enable biogas plants located at different gaushalas to be connected through a common bio-energy network. Discussions also covered the potential use of the CBG as a transport fuel and its marketing through suitable channels, including fuel stations.The proposed model is not limited to energy production.

The scientific processing of the slurry generated during biogas production could also create organic manure and other bio-inputs.These products could be supplied to farmers in surrounding areas for natural and organic farming. The approach could help increase organic carbon and nutrient availability in the soil, reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers and promote more sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices.

Focus on Making Gaushalas Economically Sustainable

Gau Seva Commission Chairman Shyam Bihari Gupta said technology-driven initiatives to convert cow dung and agricultural residues from waste into energy and economic resources were important.He said connecting gaushalas with bio-energy and bio-input production could strengthen their economic self-reliance while simultaneously supporting cattle conservation, improving farmers’ incomes and strengthening the rural economy.

The proposed project could therefore create a circular rural economy model, in which cow dung and agricultural waste are converted into energy and organic agricultural inputs, while the resulting products benefit households and farmers.Additional Support from Livestock DepartmentFollowing the meeting, the BPCL team also met Mukesh Meshram, Additional Chief Secretary, Livestock Department, and briefed him about the proposed CBG project in Tulsipur.

Meshram assured the team of the necessary cooperation and coordination for the proposed project. He also emphasised the importance of encouraging initiatives aimed at better utilisation of bio-waste generated by gaushalas and the agricultural sector.If implemented, the Tulsipur project could emerge as a model for integrating gaushalas, clean energy production, waste management and sustainable agriculture, demonstrating how rural bio-resources can be converted into commercially valuable products while contributing to Uttar Pradesh’s clean-energy transition.
